When I was about nine, I accidentally jammed a pencil in my leg, shutting a car door. The lead broke off under the skin. I couldn’t get it out. We were just starting off on a vacation, so I didn’t want to say anything. I was, however, sure that soon I would be dead from lead poisoning. I never said anything and waited to die.
