For the last couple of winters I have been screwing sheet metal screws in to my running shoes. It makes a world of difference. When the ice is all gone, I can take the screws out or just let them wear down. I put screws in shoes on the PCT (Pacific Crest Trail) before heading into the Sierras. It worked great on ice or trail but it made walking on rock more slippery.
Anyway it costs a dollar or two in screws depending on how many you put in and then you need a five dollar screw driver that can screw in hex screws. On The Goat’s site, I see there is a company selling this arrangement for 40 dollars.
I’ve been thinking about your screw shoes. How deep do the screws go? How can you tell if the screws are going in too far?

Hey Carolyn,
I screw the screws all the way in. The hex nut top is what gives the traction. 3/8 inch long for the toe and 1/2 inch long for the back of the shoe. Using those sizes just take your hex nut driver and screw them in all the way. You don’t need to pre-drill holes. I guess you know they went in too far if they are poking you in the foot, but that has never happened to me.

Been thinking about your screw shoes but needing too know what’s the best size screw too use if I was planning too use the same pair as a work pair of shoes
I used 3/8inch for the toe and 1/2 inch for the back of the shoe. The only problem with screw shoes is you can dent up floors with them if you wear them inside so you have to have another pair of shoes to wear into stores.
